The Willpower Myth

 

How often have you heard, 'its all about willpower.'  How frustrating when for a day, a week, or more you have that elusive willpower on your side, and then poof! it's gone. 

 

Well there's more to the story.... it's not that you're weak, lazy, unmotivated or not serious about your goals. Changing habits is tough and requires more than a will of steel. 


First stop the sabotage!

 

What's sabotaging your efforts? There are many contributing factors...  our current food system is riddled with addictive additives, imbalances in our microbiome can cause cravings, our culture of convenience makes bad choices so easy, and socialization reinforces these.

 

After all, who wants to say no to a drink with pals, or to sharing in the birthday cake? Our minds run at three levels according to psychologist Kelly McGonial, the author of The Willpower Instint, I will, I won't, and I want.

We make our habits, and then our habits make us.

Changing habits can be tricky, but there is a blueprint to take you from good intentions to lasting, winning habits that replace the bad ones. Be prepared, it's not a silver bullet.
